Our Flat Friends from Taiwan

Our Flat Friends from Taiwan have been with us for a little while.  They arrived in a very colorful envelope and we received FIVE beautifully decorated friends.

We have taken them around town, camping and down to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC.  I am hoping to keep them for a while longer.  They are so cute!  We are studying Asia still, reading stories and finding Asia on the map.  Check out the Asia page for more pictures of our Flat Friends.

Friends from England and Brasil

It has been a while since I posted.  As stated in the earlier post, we received friends from England and also Brazil.  More pictures from our adventures are posted on their respective continent pages.  We had a lot of fun hosting our Flat Friends and showing them our hometown.  We have sent them back home with letters and postcards from the sights!  Safe travels Flat Friends!

Friends from "Across the Pond"

We are so excited to have two friends visiting us from "across the pond."  That means they are from England!  They arrived on yesterday with two of our friends who had visited them in England. They came in their school uniforms!  They are from a town called Longbenton which is close to the city Newcastle Upon Tyne in the north east of England.  They will join us for school on Monday and we will post pictures afterwards.  We will be looking up their town on the map and looking through the pictures they sent of our Flat Stanley's visit.

We look forward to showing them around our town and taking them to visit some landmarks.

Visiting with our Flat Friends - La-la and Clarence!

I have finally uploaded the photos from some of the places we have taken our flat friends from California to visit. The pictures are loaded to our North America page.  We especially had fun visiting the Franciscan Monastery and the National Zoo with them in honor of Saint Francis' Feast Day.
Daniel, Sophia, La-la, and Clarence pose for a picture with the Pope!
Okay - not the real Pope - but it was still fun!

It is so exciting to have so many friends coming to visit us for a while.  We are enjoying visiting places and collecting postcards to send back with our friends.  We have gone camping, to a science center, and down to Washington DC.  We cannot wait to see where we will go next!

God Bless,
Daniel, Sophia and Jennifer

September 16th - A Visit to Pittsburgh

On Sunday, September 11th, we headed up to our hometown of Pittsburgh with our Australian Flat Friend.  We camped at Raccoon Creek State Park and visited family, the Children's Museum and the Carnegie Science Center.

It is always fun to visit home!  Check out the Australia link for more pictures.  I will be adding picture books, non-fiction books and movie choices to the page when we begin to study the Australian continent.  Our Australian flat friend will be departing from Maryland soon to head back to South Australia.  We wish him a good journey home and hope the kids like the postcards and things we included in our letter.

God Bless!

PS:  When we arrived home from Pittsburgh, we found two new Flat Friends had found their way to our mailbox.  While they don't come from as far as Australia, they do come from the other side of our own country - California.  We will be adding pictures of them soon and will post our adventures to the North America page.

Visiting the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal with our Australian Flat Friend! On Friday, September 2nd, we visited the C&O Canal National Park in Williamsport.  The kids had fun pointing out the number of turtles we saw while walking along the canal towpath.  We also completed some of the activities for the Junior Ranger Program, though it will take more than one visit to finish it.  This part of the C&O Canal is about 20 minutes east of us, but the Canal is less than a mile from where we live.

Our Flat Friend from Australia!

About a week ago, we received our first Flat Friend in the mail from Salisbury East in South Australia!  So excited!  Our friend came with a letter from Bailey.  So happy to have him visit for a while.  He will be with us about three more weeks, until about September 21st, so that we can send him back in time for their school project.

I have posted pictures of the kids with Flat Stanley on the Australia page.  There are only books listed right now for Africa, since that is the continent we are studying.

While we are sending our Flat Stanley's out wherever they may go - we are going to study the continents in alphabetical order.  Our first continent is, of course, Africa!  I have updated the Africa page to show the books that I have gotten thus far.  I have to add the DVD's and some more websites that I used for information on Africa and to record what we have learned.

I haven't yet gotten a response for Flat Stanley from anyone on the continent of Africa, but am very hopeful that we will before the year ends.

Some of my favorite picture books, so far, are Mama Panya's Pancakes:  A Village Tale from Kenya by Mary and Rich Chamberlain.  I am sure most mom's have felt like Mama Panya at times when their children's generosity overrides their sensibilities.  It also includes some info on Kenya and life in Kenya and a recipe for Mama Panya's Pancakes!  Bonus!  Love books that include recipes.  We also enjoyed Lila and the Secret of Rain by David Conway and Jude Daily.

Product DetailsAnother title I am going to add, but haven't gotten out is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba in the picture book edition.  I haven't read that particular edition, but loved the young reader's edition.  I think anyone can appreciate the ingenuity and ambition of William Kambwamba.

A Flatter World - Our Flat Stanley Adventures

Sometimes, deciding what to do for school is easy and sometimes, it is not.  Other times, it is quite inspired!  I had heard of Flat Stanley when my older ones were younger, but never really thought to turn it into a learning opportunity.  I had also heard of others sending off Flat Stanleys that they had created to other children.

This year, I since I had decided that I would study Geography with my second grader, Daniel and his sister, Sophia, who is only in preschool, I thought that Flat Stanley could help us with learning about the different continents and the people who lived there.

The hardest thing is to find others to exchange Flat Stanleys with.  Then, I found the website:  www.flatstanley.com.  This website matches up those who wish to exchange Flat Stanleys.  So, far, we have sent off one to Australia, one to Taiwan, and another to California.  Soon, one will travel to Brazil.  That marks off four of the seven continents, though we would love to exchange much more than that.

So, that brings me to the purpose of the blog - - I thought that it would be great to mark the travels of our Flat Stanleys and those that we receive on this blog.  I also will be including the resources we use to study each continent - books, websites, DVD's and other resources.

Hope you enjoy this blog!

In Christ,
